2022 Member Trail Grant Recipients
2022 Member Trail Grant Recipients
The STA is pleased to announce the recipients of our Member Trail Grant Program. We will be providing $500 grants each to the Bengough & District Regional Park Authority, Leader and District Tourism, the Moose Jaw Pavers Cycling Group, and the Saskatoon Trail Alliance.
Operated by a board of volunteers, the Bengough & District Regional Park Authority is responsible for the maintenance of a campground with 29 services sites that offer power, water, and sewer hook-ups. The park also offers an outdoor swimming pool, a hot tub, a 9-hole sand green golf course and driving range, playground area, beach volleyball court, ball diamond, and horseshoe pits. The park will be adding another 1km loop to an existing trail and will be updating their signs, sign poles, and benches for the public visiting the park.
Surrounded by rolling hills to the south of the area, the South Saskatchewan River valley in the north and the dry desert of the Great Sandhills, the community of Leader has some of the most unique landscapes Saskatchewan has to offer. Leader and District Tourism plan to fix existing pedestrian routes to prevent accidents and to give community members safe trail alternatives.
The Moose Jaw Pavers Cycling Club offers those interested in all forms of cycling a chance to get out and explore trails in the Moose Jaw area. The club has a trail maintenance agreement with SaskParks to support the maintenance of approximately 30 km of multiuse trails in Buffalo Pound Provincial Park. The maintenance includes vegetation clearing and minor trail tread repairs including re-establishing drainage and repair of eroded and cupped trail segments. The entire trail network is very popular and heavily used which has led to increased trail wear and the need for more efficient completion of work. To date the Pavers have used conventional fire fighting tools, but the issue with these tools is that need to be modified. The Pavers will use the funding for the purchase of trail maintenance specific tools
The Saskatoon Trail Alliance was established in 2018 to advocate for sustainable singletrack trails in Saskatoon. Local volunteers are working hard to try and help Saskatoon become the premier prairie single track trail destination in Canada. The alliance will use the funding to improve trail surfaces on the single track currently available in the city along the river valley, which is susceptible to erosion.
